New World Travelers: Similar Themes But Different Purposes In Travel W

Travel writers or adventurers all write pieces that deal with the same premise: the discovery and experience of the New World. However, in their writing, it is evident that there is an ulterior motive in mind. These motives or purposes can be classified in two broad categories: to persuade people to come to the new world and to warn people of the dangers they may encounter in the new world. It is easy to explore these themes by paying particular attention a couple of notorious writers: Christopher Columbus, Bartolome De Las Casas, and John Smith. When reading pieces by writers involved in the exploration and settlement on the new world, it is important to keep in mind the audience they were targeting. These pieces were not published in America, but rather were transmitted in Europe, published and read by a widespread European audience. Additionally, these travelers were paid by the government to propagandize the new world and entice readers to want to visit or settle there. With that in place, it is easy to understand how a major purpose for travel writers would be to advertise the new world. Christopher Columbus's letters were considered one of the first reports of the New World. Columbus landed in the West Indies but thought that he was in India. He portrays his surroundings with a conquistador mentality, in that he says the people are savages, and he has taken command of them and they admire him greatly. In "Letter to Luis de Santagel Regarding the First Voyage", he talks about the richness and beauty of the New World using very descriptive imagery and planting the picture of natural abundance in the readers mind. He describes the land, the mountains, the terrain, the animals, birds, and people in such a mann... ... the Christian against the native. His writing reads as a preaching, making it seem like propaganda. Adventurers and travel writers all wrote works with differences in focus, theme and scope, but in the case of Smith, Columbus, and De Las Casas, the themes were similar, even if the purpose behind the argument was different. It is during festival occasion hackers are on the prowl to steal or tamper with maximum user information. Nevertheless, one cannot altogether avoid shopping online as it has to be done. Here is an easy guide to smart shopping online to help you keep safe. Browsing Initially you need to understand that using a reliable browser is the best option while deciding to shop online. You can use either Chrome or Firefox; the best option is using these browsers interchangeably. If you are using two browsers at the same time then you minimize your chances of online security threat from hackers. For example, you can use Chrome for transactions login and Firefox for casual browsing. Another essential tip is to check for the URL that is displayed in the address bar above the browsing window. This indicates that it is safe to browse. Remember if you are about to check into a legitimate shopping website and it does not contain HTTPS then it is better that you do not log into it as you risk falling a prey to Phishing. Passwords Often we have a habit of continuing with the same password for a long time, this compromises your security. In order to be safer online it is essential to keep changing your passwords at a given interval of time especially during the holiday season. You need to change the passwords of your banking services, e-mail accounts and online shopping services that are similar to Amazon. Another thing to keep in mind is choosing a password that does not includes phrases or words. A password can be a composition of random words that can be separated by comas or spaces. However, you need to keep in mind that only websites like Microsoft accounts accept spaces within passwords including Amazon and Google. To be on the safe side, when you are done shopping you can again change your passwords to ensure the safety of your account. Log Out Many times, it so happens that you forget to either log out of your account or just hit the X to close the window. This way your account is still logged in and it becomes insecure as the cookies are stored that might be used for hacking your account. Make it a habit to log out of your account after you are done shopping, after using your e-mails or other such services that require login details along with passwords. VPN VPN or Virtual Private Network can be utilized to encrypt the web traffic. In case, if you do not downloading software like LogMeIn Hamachi or an option like a HotSpot Shield suited to Mac and Windows users are good alternatives. These programs will keep you safe while you shop or make transactions online via shopping website. Paying options During the holiday seasons, the web traffic is large and there are many opportunities for hackers to get their hands on the financial details of a user. However, you can stay safe by utilizing a credit card to pay for your online shopping. This will also keep you safe from any kind of online fraudulent practices. Essay on The Empowerment of Women in Trifles by Glaspell

From the beginning the women of â€Å"Trifles† by Susan Glaspell do not seem to have a significant role in the play. These women appear to just be along for the ride while their husbands do the dirty work of searching through the crime scene. In the end even though they serve as secondary characters to their husbands, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters play a large role in portraying the theme of this play, and without them the plot would not have been conducted nearly the same way to get the message out to the audience. As soon as the county attorney, the sheriff, his wife and Mr. and Mrs. Hale walk into the Wrights house there is a clear division of power between the men and the women. The men walked in with harsh faces ready to get the job†¦show more content†¦The bread has been left out of the bread box, the kitchen table had not been cleaned, the quilt that she had been working on was unfinished and poorly stitched, and lastly the bird was missing from the cage. After further investigation the women come to the conclusion that there was something wrong going on in the Wright household that caused their house to be so chaotic. Once the investigation starts one would think that the men would be the ones to solve the investigation, when in reality they are too caught up on the stereotypes of women during this time period and completely overlook the evidence as â€Å"trifles†. The men instead decide skip looking through the kitchen and instead to do the majority of their investigating in barn and the bedroom because during this time period these are places where men would feel dominant over women. After some deep thought Mrs. Hale’s comment â€Å"I wonder if she was goin’ to quilt it or just knot it?† (1416): finally makes sense. The women were not referring to the quilt, but were instead referring to Mrs. Wright hanging Mr. Wright. The men obviously were not very observant or well versed with quilting terminology otherwise they could have easily deciphered this phrase and known that the women had figured out the motive for the murder. The theme of this play deals with the discrimination and poor treatment of women during this time period. Nature Vs. Nurture Debate - 2114 Words

Nature vs. Nurture Albert Camus once said, â€Å"Man is the only creature who refuses to be what he is.† But what makes man what he is? Is it his sheer genetic makeup, or is it the way he was raised? The nature vs. nurture debate has raged on for centuries, but neither side has been able to prove their point indefinitely. Even today we see displays of the contrast between genetics and learned behaviors, some of which are athletics, intelligence, medical histories, etc. Every person is completely unique, a combination of genetic makeup and environment make an individual who they are. Though the argument has never been settled, both sides of the Nature vs. Nurture debate hold enough evidence to make a strong case for their beliefs. Those on the nature side believe that all aspects of a person’s being are granted to him or her through the genetics at birth. Every ounce of ability, intelligence, and personality are derived from the ancestry of the person in question. Those who propose the nurture side of the argument believe that the source of a person’s intelligence, personality, and abilities are developed through experiences in their life and the environment in which they were raised in. They believe the traits that are developed by humans are in direct correlation to the positive or negative environment where an individual is raised. Margaret Thatcher †Emancipated Woman Free Essays

Even today in the year 2009 the top political positions in most countries are still male-dominated. Emancipation has made a lot of progress during the last decades, but woman in the prime political positions such as the president or the prime minister are still a rare sight. For example when Angela Merkel became the first female Chancellor of Germany in 2005 it was regarded as a milestone in German politics; and the USA, the country of freedom and sophistication has yet to experience a female president. We will write a custom essay sample on Margaret Thatcher – Emancipated Woman or any similar topic only for you Order Now One of the exceptions in this context is the UK. Not because of the UK itself but because of Margaret Thatcher. She took office as the first female Prime Minister of the UK as well as the first female leader of the Conservative Party already 30 years ago, when women in such high political positions were basically non-existent. She was one of the forerunners for the emancipated women in today’s world. She was nicknamed â€Å"the Iron Lady† and the term Thatcherism was invented to describe her distinctive style and content of her politics. So what set her apart from the others; how was it possible for her to become Britain’s first female Prime Minister, a feat that no other woman so far could duplicate? One reason for her inimitable success was definitely her steadfast character. She had a strong opinion and did not let others dissuade her from doing her thing. A prime example for this is her behavior in October of 1984 when the IRA made an attempt on her life, which became known as the Brighton hotel bombing. In the night of October 12, 1984, the IRA detonated large bombs in the Grand Hotel in Brighton/UK, where many high-level politicians were staying because of the British Conservative Party Conference the next day. The bomb detonated at around 3 o’clock in the morning, when Margaret was in her hotel room, still awake preparing a conference speech that she gave on the same day. The bomb badly damaged adjacent rooms and killed several of her fellow politicians, but she came away uninjured, spending the rest of the night at a police station for security reasons. The IRA claimed responsibility the next day, part of their statement was: â€Å"Mrs. Thatcher will now realize that Britain cannot occupy our country and torture our prisoners and shoot our people in their own streets and get away with it. Today we were unlucky, but remember we only have to be lucky once. You will have to be lucky always. Give Ireland peace and there will be no more war. † (IRA, 1984). One would assume that she needed a day off to assimilate the shock of the bombing, but Margaret continued to do business as usual, attended the Conference punctually at 9:30 (a mere 6 hours after the attack) and gave her speech which included the following statement â€Å"†¦the fact that we are gathered here now†¦is a sign not only that this attack has failed, but that all attempts to destroy democracy by terrorism will fail. (That-cher, 1984) Besides her resolute character, the other key component of her success was her political and economic philosophy. Thatcher was a firm supporter of democracy. She was anti-communism and in favor of free markets with little government intervention. In January 1976, as the leader of the opposition (before she became Prime Minister), she criticized the Soviet Union in a speech that included: â€Å"The men in the Soviet Politburo do not have to worry about the ebb and flow of public opinion. They put guns before butter, while we put just about. verything before guns. † (Thatcher, 1984). Other key elements of Thatcher’s philosophy included entrepreneurialism, monetarism, opposition to trade unions and privatization of state-owned industries Margaret Thatcher really was of the precursors of today’s emancipated women. She is one of the most influential British politicians of the last decades and the fact that she is a woman makes this even more impressive. Her incredible success was mainly due to her unwavering character and the content of her politics and economic policies. The fact that Thatcher’s politics had a long-lasting effect becomes especially clear in a statement of Peter Mandelson, member of Parliament belonging to the British Labour Party: â€Å"we are all Thatcherites now. † (Mendelson, 2002) ? Gold top tubes contain Serum Separator Gel which are used for chemistry, immunology and serology tests and requires 5-6 inversions. Light blue tubes contain sodium citrate which are used for coagulation tests and only requires 3-4 inversions. Black top tubes on the other hand contain buffered sodium citrate which are used for erythrocyte sedimentation rate and requires 8-10 times inversions. Red plastic tubes which contain silica enhances clot formation and are used also for chemistry, immunology and serology and blood bank and also requires 5-6 times inversions. Light green tubes contain lithium heparin which are used for troponin t and donor screening tests and requires 8-10 inversions. Lastly, the lavender tubes contain EDTA whose action forms calcium salts to remove Ca and prevent clotting and are used in CBC determination and donor screening and crossmatching and also requires 8-10 times inversions. It is also important to avoid blood extraction in sites such as edematous, calloused, burned, cold, cyanotic, and congested area because this will result to failure of collection and may also cause so much pain to patients. There are many good and skilled phlebotomist in the lab. Some are assigned in warding in-patients (P1 and P2) and others are assigned in out-patients (OPD). I was first assigned as a P1 during my first three days in phlebotomy. The P1 are assigned to Emergency Rooms, Medical Ward Extension and 3rd floor rooms. For in-patients, the warding time is every two hours when the worklist and barcodes were already printed. I first thought that the morning shift was busier than the afternoon and evening shifts but to my surprise, only at the maximum of five patients were to be collected in every warding time. Usually, the RMT would only let me extract blood by myself. But when I encounter a difficult vein, he was there to assist me. During my P1 days, I was able to perform unique tests such as blood culture and collect blood from difficult sites such as feet. I felt a feeling of fulfilment after doing such activities. When a STAT request is being called by the ER personnel, I was the one who usually collect the blood even if the patient has a difficult vein. Next, I was assigned as a phlebotomist in the OPD. Usually, a patients’ request form is carried out by the receptionist then printed with barcode. The patient is then called out in order to have blood extraction. Once the patient is in, he must be identified correctly before drawing of blood. After the procedure, the specimens collected were then placed in their trays corresponding to the test. During my last three days in phlebotomy, I was finally assigned as a P2. P2 covered the ICU, OB-surg, Pedia and 4th floor wards. Life as a P2 was a little bit hard because you have to deal more with some unconscious patients, pediatric and newborns. I’ve learned a lot of techniques from her especially when collecting from pediatric patients. She also introduced me to collect blood from newborns having tests such as bilirubin and newborn screening. After those days as a phlebotomist, I learned to control my nervousness and gained a lot of confidence. The techniques and approaches I encountered will always be treasured and forever will remain in mind. Appreciatively, now I know how to draw blood quickly and efficiently.
